Analysis by States, Causes, Industry Groups, Sectors and Months
6.1.1 In all there were 24 cases of retrenchments in which 884 workers were affected during the year. This reflects a decrease of 31.43 percent in respect of retrenchments and also or decrease of 59.52 percent in the number of workers retrenched over the previous year. Out of 24 cases, 19 (79.17 per cent) affecting 257 (or 29.07 per cent) workers were in the State Sphere while 5 cases of retrenchments (20.83 per cent) affecting 627 workers (70.93 per cent) were reported from the Central Sphere. The workers retrenched were more in the Central Sphere than in State Sphere.
6.1.2 Tables- 6 (I) (a) to 6 (I) (g) present statistics relating to retrenchment of workers by States, Causes, Industries, Sectors and Months during the year 2006.
Analysis by States
6.2.1 State Sphere: Table-6(I) (a) shows that the maximum number of retrenchments of both spheres i.e., Six ( 25.00 percent) was reported in the State of Gujarat followed by Four cases each (16.67 percent) in Orissa and West Bengal and Three cases each (12.5) percent) in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. The number of workers retrenched was highest in Orissa i.e., 544 (61.54 percent) of the total workers retrenched followed by 150 (16.97 percent) in Gujarat and 70 (7.92 percent) in Himachal Pradesh. The highest number of cases of Retrenchments (19) were reported in the State Sphere and largest number of workers (627) affected due to retrenchment were in the Central Sphere.
6.2.2 Central Sphere: Three cases of retrenchment affecting 535 workers due to reasons ‘Others’ and ‘Cause not Known’ were reported in Orissa and Two cases of retrenchment affecting thereby 92 workers under the cause group ‘Others’ were reported in Gujarat. (Table-6 (I) (a).
Analysis By Causes
6.3.1 State Sphere: The monetary cause group i.e., ‘Financial Stringency’ accounted for Seven retrenchments (or 29.17 per cent) and 92 workers (or 10.41 per cent) affected. The non-financial cause groups viz., ‘Lack of Demand for Products’, ‘Others’ and ‘Cause not Known’ taken together were responsible for the maximum number of retrenchments 17 (or 70.83 per cent) and workers affected thereby 792 (or 89.59 per cent) during the year under study.
6.3.2 Central Sphere: In Central Sphere three and two cases of retrenchments affecting 271and 356 workers respectively were due to causes classified as ‘Others’ and Cause ‘Not Known’ during the year, 2006.
Analysis By Industry Groups
6.4.1 State Sphere: It may be seen from Table- 6 (I) (c) that eight cases (or 33.33 percent) of retrenchments were in the ‘Manufacturing Division’ (Industry Codes 15 to 37) wherein 94 workers (10.63 percent) were retrenched of the total number of workers retrenched in both spheres. In Industry Groups 24 – ‘Manufacture of Chemicals and Chemical Products’ and Industry Group – 29 ‘Manufacture of Machinery and Equipment Not elsewhere classified’ in which 21 and 52 workers were retrenched.
6.4.2 Central Sphere: Three cases of retrenchment affected 535 workers occurred in the Industry Group 13 – ‘Mining of Metal Ore’ and two cases of retrenchments affecting 92 workers took place in Industry Group – 14 ‘Other Mining and Quarrying’.
Analysis By Sectors
6.5.1 State Sphere: Table-6 (I) (d) reveals that the highest number of retrenchment and workers retrenched i.e. 23 cases (95.83 per cent) and 866 (or 97.96 per cent) were in the Private Sector during the year 2006. One case of retrenchment affecting 18 workers was reported in Co-operative Sector.
6.5.2 Central Sphere: Five cases of retrenchment affecting 627 workers were in the Private Sector.
Analysis By Months
6.6.1 State Sphere: It may be seen from Table- 6 (I) (g) that the maximum four cases (16.67 percent) occurred in the month of June followed by three cases each (12.5 percent) in the months of March, September and December, 2006. The maximum number of workers affected due to retrenchment were 359 (40.61 per cent) during the month of July followed by 179 (or 20.25 per cent) during the month of October, 2006.
6.6.2 Central Sphere: Two cases of retrenchments occurred in the month of February followed by one case each of Retrenchment occurred July, August and October, 2006 respectively.
