PREFACE

The present publication “Wage Rates in Rural India”, tenth in the series, contains information in respect of daily wage rates for 18 agricultural and non-agricultural occupations,   collected every month in the Schedule 3.01(R) along with Rural Retail Prices covering 600 sample villages, spread over 66 NSS regions,  falling in 20 states of India.  State wise as well as All India average daily wage rates are compiled and published on monthly basis in “Indian Labour Journal” since April, 1998. These are also available on Labour Bureau’s website http://laboureau.nic.in.

The data so collected and disseminated is utilized in the study of cost of cultivation for the purpose of fixation and revision of support /procurement prices of both Kharif and Rabi crops.  It also meets the requirement of complementary data for the studies relating to enforcement of minimum wages in agriculture.  Keeping in view its utility and value for the policy makers as well as other researchers and users, the wage rate data for the agricultural year 2006-07 are presented in a compact form in this booklet.

I appreciate the efforts of officers and staff of Wage Rate Unit (Annexure-II) of Labour Bureau for their sincere and commendable contribution in compiling and bringing out this publication.

The Bureau welcomes the suggestions for improvement in the quality as well as the contents of this publication.
